Where We Are/Where Were Headed
Where We Are
Currently, Six Oaks Farm is situated on 40 acres. The farm features the original farmhouse with original outbuildings. There is a stocked pond, 22 acres of open fields and woods as well. We have 2 gardens consisting of over 20,000 square feet of planting space. In November of 2018, our on farm store has officially opened!
Where were Headed
In the future, Six Oaks Farms plans to expand all operations to include garden space, leasing or purchasing an adjoining property and increasing our livestock holdings. Already for 2018 we are implementing a few new projects. One project is to include a CSA(Community Supported Agriculture) Program into the farm's existing vegetable sales to commence in 2019. NEW this year will be a pick your own flower garden, sunflower field with photo ops and an on farm store featuring our meat, vegetable and flower products. We hope to gain many new satisfied customers with this program and supply our neighbors with fresh, clean vegetables and soon a pork add-on option to the service.
We are now and have been increasing our pig herd since we started with the farm. In the beginning, we purchased 3 pigs including 2 sows and 1 boar as breeders. Since then we have increased our breeder numbers to over 22 actively breeding stock in an attempt to satisfy customer demand. We will be further increasing our breeder herd this year as well. At any time, the swine herd on the farm is as many as 100+ pigs on the pastures.
Six Oaks Farm is in the process of starting a new breed of Heritage Swine that will be called Carolina Forest Spot Hogs. This is a very long process and will take years to accomplish. We have already started our new line and have generations of pigs to breed to improve it. These will be a superior breed of swine that will perform very well on pasture, requiring little additional feed inputs, and will produce an amazing quality of pork that will be lean but well marbled with little surface fat.
Another ongoing project is construction of a large smokehouse. With this added feature we will be able to offer curing and smoking services to our customers. We will have the capacity to cure and smoke bacon, hams, hocks and half or whole pigs. Unfortunately, none of the local meat processors offer curing or smoking services, we would like to fulfill our customers wishes in that area. The smokehouse concrete and block base and firebox are completed at this point. Final construction of the upper structure should be completed in February 2015.
Looking further ahead into the future, Six Oaks Farm would like to begin offering a variety of classes. These classes would include such subjects as vegetable gardening, raising pastured pigs and grass fed beef, butchering classes and curing and smoking for meat preservation.
